FAQ

What is Soap?

Surgeries Overseas Assistance Program is a 501(c)(3) corporation formed to help educate international surgeons at resource scarce countries while increasing access to care for the impoverished patients within those teaching centers.

How will SOAP use my donation?

As of 2024, SOAP is currently focused on teaching efforts in Moshi, Tanzania. There is an orthopedic teaching program at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC). SOAP will support surgeon educators traveling there by funding additional surgeries to improve the efficiency and time the resident surgeons there (in-training) get to spend in the operating room. SOAP also works to obtain and transfer surgical supplies to KCMC. A surgery at KCMC cost ~$160, but this is a reach for many of citizens in Moshi and its surrounding areas. By covering the cost of the surgery, the needed procedures can be performed in a timely fashion.

Healthcare costs are high here in the USA, why not focus locally?

Costs of healthcare are certainly an issue everywhere. In the US, emergent/urgent operations are provided for indigent patients regardless of their ability to pay. In Tanzania, the payment is required upfront. This creates long delays on surgeries needed for traumatic injuries which increases the complication rate, damages healing, and decreases the opportunity for teaching cases.

How do I know my donation will be used correctly?

SOAP is committed to transparency. We will post financial records and, more importantly, provide continued stories of SOAP’s impact with patients and doctors. For additional information, please contact our staff at info@rerdin
