A Surgery for Frank!

Our SOAP team was so glad we were here in Tanzania when Frank arrived at KCMC!  He is a 14 year old young man with an engaging, shy smile, who broke his right upper leg (femur) when he fell from a tree.  Most of the patients, for whom SOAP funds their surgeries, have families that can pay for the minor portions— pre-op labs, medications, IV supplies, etc.   “Frankie,” as the Tanzanian residents smilingly call him, is not so fortunate.   Both of his parents have died of HIV.  He has no other family that he can live with—instead, he has been assigned to live with a neighbor, by his community.  Through your kind donations, SOAP was gratefully able to cover, not only Frankie’s surgery, but also all the other charges, including his crutches!  Thank you, Friends of SOAP!!

Drs. Casey and Josef directed the case.  They, again, reinforced minimally invasive technique, making only 3 very small incisions, which will aid healing!  (And, be sure to check out the Tanzanian resident on the left posing with the new, SOAP donated drill!)

Here are Frankie’s X-rays, before and after surgery.  The post-op view shows the bone, repaired with a rod and screws!  Thank you, SOAP, for your support of this young man!
