This week, our SOAP team is happy to be joined by Dr. Ginny Casey, a pediatric orthopedist from OrthoCarolina in Charlotte! Dr. Casey was also on our team last year, so the Tanzanian residents were very excited to see her return, as there is a huge need in the field of pediatric orthopedics here. The residents had lined up several patients for consults, and one of them was Asmaa! She is a 16 year old young lady that had a bow in her right leg due to unequal growth. On Sunday, Drs. Casey, Josef, and Ani took Asmaa to the operating room to treat this surgically. They put a SOAP donated plate on the inside of Asmaa’s knee over her growth plate. This plate will stop the growth on that side, while allowing normal growth on the other side. This will gradually straighten Asmaa’s bone over time! One of the most important parts of the surgery was the pre-op planning that Dr. Casey did with the residents. At the Tanzanian residents’ request, she wrote out all the steps for the surgery and led an in-depth discussion prior to the case. Awesome education taking place!
This morning, Asmaa was able to get up and walk without pain, and was ready for discharge!
