Please meet our new friend, Camilla, that we met on Saturday. She is a 7 year old little girl with one of the cutest smiles around! She broke her right arm two weeks ago, playing with her friends. Because it was two weeks ago, and she has such strong, young bone, her injury had already healed. The bone had knitted back together, but, because the break had never been treated, the pieces healed in the wrong position. To treat this in Tanzania, usually she would have received a very large incision to correct her deformity. Drs. Ani and Josef were in the hospital Saturday morning operating on other patients when she came in. Dr. Josef was able to lead the case and reinforce the concept of minimally invasive surgery! He was able to break up the incorrectly healed bone, put the bones back in line, and secure them with a pin— all with an incision less than a half an inch long! Because the incision is so small, this reduces the risks of complications and increases healing by shortening the OR time and having such a small wound to heal. Camilla was all smiles on rounds this morning and was discharged today!
Thanks, SOAP, for helping to give Camilla a successful surgery with the simplest healing course, complete with a thumbs up with Dr. Bobby!
