Introducing Emmanuel — he is a young man that had a break of his upper leg.
The Tanzanian residents called our US residents last night and asked if one of them would return to the hospital to assist with Emmanuel’s surgery. Dr. Josef went back and had a great opportunity to teach! Emmanuel was an excellent candidate for a minimally invasive surgery, meaning the surgery was performed through two small incisions, rather than one large one. Not having a large surgical wound will greatly help Emmanuel’s body’s ability to heal. Our SOAP team then reviewed the case with the other residents in conference this morning. SOAP is excited that Dr. Josef had a chance to continue reinforcing minimally invasive surgical techniques, and Emmanuel was very pleased with this size of his incisions! (And, you might recognize our friend, Dr. Shahnoor, on the left in the photo above! He is the Tanzanian resident that worked and stayed with several SOAP surgeons during his traveling fellowship in the US in December. His fellowship was sponsored by Handzania, a friend of SOAP.)
