Frances’ Complicated Hand Wound

Greetings, SOAP Friends, from the shadow of Kili!  Today, I’d like to introduce Frances.

He sustained multiple wounds from a machete, including a very complicated wound to his right hand, that needed orthopedic surgery.  Initially, it was thought that his wound cut the tendons on the back of his hand that serve to extend his fingers.  Drs. Josef and Ani went into the OR with the Tanzanian residents to work on the repair.  Once the surgery began, they realized that the wound extended to the palm side and also involved the tendons that allow the fingers to flex.  They were able to perform a multi-layer repair, of both the extensor and flexor tendons, using sutures that were donated to SOAP!

It was an excellent teaching case, and SOAP so appreciates the support of all our generous donors!
